Thomas Firman Howell 

December 19, 1936- March 17, 2025

 

Thomas Firman Howell, 88, passed away on March 17, 2025, at Accolade Healthcare. Born in Danville, Illinois on December 19, 1936, Thomas was the son of Dwain D. and Josephine (Hecquet) Howell. He graduated from Danville High School in 1954 before proudly serving his country in the Unites States Air Force, achieving the rank of Airman First Class (A1C). During his service, he worked as an aircraft mechanic specializing in bomber maintenance, ensuring the readiness and safety of the aircraft that played a vital role in national defense. 

Thomas married the love of his life, Rita Wicoff, on July 16, 1966. They built a life together filled with love, family and dedication to one another. They shared 51 wonderful years of marriage before Rita’s passing in 2017.

After his military service, Thomas dedicated 45 years to his career as an automotive mechanic, earning a reputation for his skill, hard work, and integrity. He had a deep passion for his craft and took great pride in helping others keep their vehicles running smoothly. Throughout his career, he worked at Haas Battery, Coffman’s Truck Service and Mark’s Auto Electric. 

 Thomas is survived by his daughter, Deborah (Randy) Mikel; two sons, Kevin Howell, Eric Howell; five grandchildren, Heather Mikel, Sarah Mikel, Sara Howell, Rachel (Adam) Cundiff, Dylan Mikel; four great grandchildren, Hunter Ollis, Theodore, Judah and Ruby Cundiff; one nephew, David R. Howell. 

Thomas is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Rita, and one brother and sister-in-law, Dwain (Skip) D. and Nora Howell.  

In his free time, Thomas enjoyed target shooting and reloading, hobbies that reflected his patience and attention to detail. A lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, he cheered on his team through every season, always remaining hopeful for the next big win. 

A celebration of Thomas’s life will be held on Monday, March 24, 2025, at Second Church of Christ, 3350 E Voorhees, Danville, IL. Visitation will take place from 10:00 to 10:30 AM, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 10:30 AM. 

Following the service, burial with full military honors will take place at Danville National Cemetery, where Thomas will be laid to rest in recognition of his service to his country. 

His memory will be cherished by his family and friends, who will forever hold in their hearts the kindness, dedication, and quiet strength he embodied.
