Sue Ann (Fruechtenicht) Voorhees Obituary

On a Friday, the 27th of August 1943, a baby girl was born to Arthur H. Fruechtenicht and Dorothea Frances Urbahns-Fruechtenicht at the Coleman Hospital, IU Campus in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Sue Ann was welcomed by her parents and doted on by her maternal grandparents, Ben H. Urbahns and Grace B. Urbahns, who was the first woman Treasurer of Indiana, who finished the term of her husband upon his death in office.  Grace then successfully ran and was elected to 2 terms.  And also, her paternal grandparents, William Fruechtenicht and Clara E. Richter, and great-grandparents, Henry Fruechtenicht and Marie Dorothea Louise von Frieling.

Just 3 years later, her parents welcomed a son, Arthur W. Fruechtenicht, and he was greatly loved by his parents and his big sister.  They enjoyed their young years going to school in Fort Wayne, IN., and spent many weekends and holidays at the family cottage on Caruso Point in Lake James, Angola, IN., and in Siesta Key, FL.

Sue Ann attended and graduated with a degree in History from Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, Michigan.  Her brother and father both graduated from I.U. Law School . Bloomington, IN., and had a successful Law Firm in Fort Wayne, IN.

Sue Ann was a voracious reader of History Literature and Cowboy fiction.  She had a great love of cats and had many throughout her lifetime.  She also loved to watch the TV show, Jeopardy, and took the tests to qualify, but sadly didn't make it.  When she knitted and listened to the show though, she knew 99% of the answers!  Always amazing!

Sue Ann married Stepen H. Voorhees at the little White Chapel at Lake James, IN. and they had their only child, a son, Philip Arthur Voorhees born on December 28,1969.

Sue Ann and Stephen had their own Photography Studio in Carmel, IN., and were the primary photographers for the Indy 500 Event for several years. Their son, Philip followed in his father's love of photography and worked at WTHR, in Indianapolis, and WICD in Champaign, IL., and WLFI in Lafayette, IN. and also did free-lance work with the COLTS, PACERS and Notre Dame games.  Sue Ann was so proud of her son!

Sue Ann was delighted when her son, Philip, met Dorothea Louise Gasper and planned to marry in 1999.  Not only did she have the name of her mother, but also her father's sister, Dorothea, and her great-grandmother, Marie Dorothea Louise.  Sue Ann shared with her future daughter-in-law that she'd always wanted a daughter and asked if she could help in planning their wedding and it was graciously accepted!  Sue Ann had SO much fun picking out the flowers and designing the wedding cake, and reserving the same Little White Chapel at Lake James, IN., where she was married 30 years earlier.  It was a lovely wedding!

Philip and Dorothea spent many weekends with Sue Ann at her Lake cottage. When Philip and his dad did free-lance work at Notre Dame, Sue Ann and Dorothea would be out in the garden planting hostas and daylilies.  They'd plant awhile then take a break and have a wine cooler.  Sue Ann said she liked gardening this way!

Sue Ann's health took a turn when she was unable to walk any longer and became bedridden.  The last year of her life, she moved close to Dorothea and Steven Klemme, who were her daily caretakers. Days were spent watching her favorite TV shows, talking about the good old days and deciding on what was for lunch and dinner.

Sue Ann died on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at Franciscan Hospital, Lafayette, IN., and joined her son, Philip, in Heaven.  Her husband died 28 days later, on their son's birthday.

Sue Ann was preceded in death by her son, parents, brother, nephew and grandparents.

Surviving Sue Ann is Frank Urbahns, cousin, of Surprise, AZ., her sister-in-law, Sara Fruenchtenicht of Wilmington, N.C., her niece, Jenna Fruechtenicht-Butler, great niece Sara Frances Butler, and great nephew, Algernon Butler of Wilmington, N.C.  Her daughter-in-law, Dorothea L. Gasper, and special friend, Steven Klemme of Kingman, IN.

Per her wishes, Sue Ann was cremated at Watson Cremation Services in Danville, IL., and her ashes will be spread at Lake James, Angola, IN., in the spring/summer of 2026.

Rest in Heavenly Peace, Sue Ann.  You will be missed.
