Mary C Smith 

Georgetown, IL - Mary C. Smith, age 78, passed away on March 26, 2025 at Accolade Nursing Home in Danville, Il. 

 She was born on December 1, 1946 in LaPorte, Indiana, the daughter of Henry Lanie and Elizabeth (Bangle) Lanie. 

She graduated from LaPorte High School. After graduation she found work at American Home Foods. She married Gary Lewis and had two boys (John and Rob).  After their divorce, she then moved to Georgetown, Il in 1985.  She had a special relationship with Ronald D. “Sonny” Reffett and had a son (Troy Reffett). She then worked for Eagle Grocery Store in Tilton, IL for many years.

She was preceded in death by her father Henry Lanie and her mother Elizabeth (Bangle) Lanie along with her brothers, Jerry Lanie and Dennis Lanie and her three nephews Chris, Don and Scott (Scooter) Carpenter.

She is survived by:

Brother: James Allen Lanie and his wife Hilda along with Mary’s  nephew Corren Lanie and his wife Tracey

Sister: Louise (Erickson) Lanie and her husband Paul 

Sister: Pat (Carpenter) Lanie 

Sister: Laura (Sischo) Lanie and her husband Floyd  along with Mary’s nieces Tracey (Biggs) Kirkpatrick and husband Alan, Jennifer (Lindewald) James and her wife Valerie and nephew Sean Lindewald 

Nephew: Dennis Lanie Jr. 

Brother: Michael Lanie and his wife Mildred along with her niece Karla Lanie-Lopez and nephews Michael, Spencer and Stewart 

Son: John Smith (of Spokane, WA)

Son: Robert Lewis and his wife Cari (of Westville, IL) along with her grandchildren Shelby Hughes and husband Dylan and great grandchild Beau Allen Hughes and her grandchild Carson Lewis 

Son: Troy Reffett and his wife Shelby (of Paris, IL) along with her grandchildren Alexis Reffett and Taitum Reffett

Mary also had a best friend ‘til the end - Darla Barney, her home health care nurse of over 10 years. 

She loved her collection of Beanie Babies and M&M collectibles.  She loved to watch old western movies and her favorite actor was John Wayne (whom her first son John was named after). 

She enjoyed spending time doing latch hook and puzzles. 

Mary loved and adored her family, and especially enjoyed time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchild. 

Graveside services will be held by Watson Cremation and Funeral Services and officiated by Pastor Rob Caudill Jr. from Waynetown Baptist Church. Services will be held at 11:00 am at Forest Park Cemetery in Georgetown, IL.  on April 12, 2025.
