Esther DeToye Obituary

E. Diane (Smith) DeToye passed away on February 25,2023 at Colonial Manor in Danville, IL.  She was born on January 25, 1945 the daughter of Bernice L. Smith and John Kirk Smith in Davenport, IA. She was united in marriage on September 19, 1964 to James DeToye in Davenport, IA.  Both parents and one brother, Charles Smith, preceded her in death. 

She is survived by her loving husband James DeToye, her son Robert (Bob) DeToye (Pam Williford), her daughter Julie Rohrer and her husband Rick Rohrer, and Grandson Tyler (Layla) Rohrer.  Also, surviving are her sisters Karen Palbicki of Sun Lakes, AZ, Velda Smith of Sun Lakes, AZ, Paula (Bill) Metz of Davenport, IA, Roberta Miller of Charlotte, NC, her brother James (Connie) Smith of Woodbury, MN and sister-in-law Lita Smith.

Diane attended St. Paul the Apostle Elementary School and Davenport Central High School and upon graduation, moved to Kewanee, IL where she met her husband and was married.  While in Kewanee, she served as an election judge and worked in the Kewanee School District. In 1976, her family was transferred to Danville, IL where she operated a daycare service for many years. In 1992, the family was transferred to Greenville, NC.  Upon retirement, the family moved back to Danville, IL to be with their children.

Diane loved cake decorating and candy making as well as cooking.  She loved swimming and served as a life-guard in her youth.  She was a member of Second Church of Christ in Danville. She loved to travel and watch old movies.  Above all, she loved her family.

Per her wishes, she was cremated and a memorial service will be held at the Second Church of Christ 3350 E. Voorhees St in Danville on March 3, 2023 from 4 to 6 PM.
