It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Dorothy Elizabeth Shutes, from Danville Il. Dorothy was a very proud 94-year-old. She passed away with loving family by her side, on July 5, at 6:03 am.
Dorothy was born the daughter of Herman and Ellen White in Danville, Illinois, on April 17, 1932. She was the last surviving child of Herman and Ellen White (Smith).
On May 20, 1950, Dorothy married the love of her life, Charles Raymond Shutes, who shared 61 wonderful and exciting devoted years of marriage.
In her early years, Dorothy worked at Woolworths lunch counter. Later she worked for many years at General Electric, but her true calling was caring for children. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and friend.
Dorothy spent many years as a daytime caregiver and later operated a licensed daycare from her home alongside her husband.
Dorothy enjoyed children, her flower gardens and saving wandering cats. She spent hours building puzzles of every season. Making baby quilts for every newborn born in the family was a very favorite pastime. Dorothy loved the years when she made numerous stuffed animals and Cabbage Patch Dolls. Always busy with a life surrounded by children. Dorothy and her husband ran a licensed Day Care in her home for several years until retirement. In their spare time they went to many car shows and enjoyed driving their street rods.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Michael (Sandee) Shutes, Timothy Shutes, Christy (John) Kinney, Greg Shutes, Pamela (Jay) Sorrell, Penny Hillard, David Shutes, Shayla (Travis) Kutemeier, Jeremy (Lee Ann) Shutes. Dorothy had 41 grandchildren, 79 great- grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren, in addition to the many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by: Her parents, Herman & Ellen White (Smith), husband, Charles Raymond Shutes, her sisters, Theda (Sally) Hastings, Thelma Cating, Marjorie (June) Rodgers and Donna Simonton, Grandchildren, Cody Shutes, Timothy Shutes II, Jennifer Kinney, Andrew Duprey, Tiffanie (Shutes) Mitchell, great grandchild Audry Shutes and several extended family members.
Dorothy had a huge family and enjoyed the gatherings for the holidays. The family request your presence as we celebrate the life everyone shares with her.
Visitation will be held on July 14, from 4-7 pm at Vermilion Valley Vineyard Church, 3733 Poolside Dr., Danville, IL. Visitation will also be on July 15, from 1-2 pm with funeral services following at 2 pm. We will say our last goodbyes at the graveside at Greenwood Cemetery Rd., Danville, IL. Dinner gathering will be held at the Church following services.
Dorothy’s life is not defined by her passing, but by the love and treasured moments her family had with her.
