Donald Carl Swearingen passed away on November 11th, 2024 at OSF Sacred Heart of Mary in Danville,
Illinois. Don was born on January 18th, 1941, in Champaign, Illinois to Harry and Mary Swearingen. He
was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter, and one great grandson. He is survived by his
wife of 53 years, Susan Swearingen, sibling’s; Betty Goin, Patricia (Bruce) Rothery, Marilyn and (Doug)
Gose, children; Mark (Tetiana Leonard) Swearingen, Robin (Julie) Swearingen, Terry Swearingen, Patrick
Swearingen, Christopher Swearingen, Matthew Swearingen, Mary Swearingen, 17 grandchildren, 24
great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and close friends Freddie Howard and Harold Nixon.
Donald graduated from Westville High School in 1959. He went on to serve in the United States Army
from 1959-1969 attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. During his time in the Army, he served tours in
Vietnam, Norway, and Turkey as a communications and intelligence specialist and was awarded the
Vietnam Service and Campaign Medals and the Good Conduct Medal. Don retired as a member of the
dietary and nutrition team from the Illiana Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Danville in 2009. He
enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing cards, drinking coffee, gun shows, spring
mushroom hunting, and taking long walks at Kickapoo State Park with his wife. Don was a member of
the Central Park Church of Christ in Tilton, IL.
Visitation will be held at Vermilion Valley Vineyard Church from 3pm-5pm on Sunday November 17th,
2024. Burial service will be at the VA Cemetery at 10am on Monday November 18th, 2024.
