Darrell W. Carpenter, 73, passed away peacefully on Sunday July 30, 2023 at Accolade Health Care in Danville. He was born on June 11, 1950 to Robert Carpenter Sr. and Dorothy (Juvinall) Pollitt in Danville, Illinois. He married Sandra Broadway on December 27, 1969. Darrell is survived by his only child, Darrell Wayne Carpenter and daughter-inlaw, Melanie Carpenter. His grandchildren, Greyson (Brenda) Carpenter, Brendon Carpenter and Kailey Carpenter. Also his great grandchildren, Izabelle Carpenter, Annabelle Doyle, and another due in January 2024. He leaves behind his brothers Randy Carpenter and Mike Pollitt and sisters Jeanette Covington and Dee Wilson. As well as many, many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He will especially be missed by his “kid in a fur coat” rescue chihuahua, Scooby. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, step-father Howard Pollitt, sister Diane Price, brothers Bobby Carpenter, Terry Carpenter, and Howard Wayne Pollitt and nephew Matthew Carpenter. Also his special Uncle Philip (Flip) Juvinall whom he loved having a cup of coffee and visiting with. He served during the Vietnam war from 1969 to 1971 spending all his time in Okinawa, Japan. Darrell liked teaching his grandchildren how to speak Japanese and telling them “if you do, you’ll clean it up” after their bumbled attempts. Darrell was a life long mechanic who always had a project car in the works. He enjoyed tinkering around and built quite a few rather impressive cars in his younger days and enjoyed sharing tales with others about how his El Camino dropped the rear axle in the middle of the street due to the amount of torque. Darrell was always part of the family business Carpenter’s Wrecker Service from working the gas station at Gilbert and Williams streets to driving everything from a one ton to the heavy duty on Collett St. He also worked on every truck as the shop mechanic. Darrell had many different jobs throughout his life but he truly loved “sailing the concrete sea” of driving a semi across country. Darrell liked to fish and to sit on the front porch and watch a thunderstorm. He also enjoyed playing pool with his family. A memorial fellowship followed by a service will be held on Friday August 11, 2023 at The Rock Church 20 Poland Rd. Danville starting at 11:00 am. Full Honor Guard Services will be at 1:00 at the VA National Cemetery in Danville. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a memorial donation be made to your local American Legion or the Vermilion County Animal Shelter.
