Beverly E. Newberry, 78, of Danville, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Carle
Foundation Hospital in Champaign. She was born on August 15, 1947, in Danville,
Illinois to Lawrence and Helen (Nelson) Cheeseman. She married John Newberry, and
they shared 56 years of marriage before his passing on March 18, 2022.
Beverly will be deeply missed by her daughters, Christine (Newberry) Martin, Amy
Newberry; granddaughters, Jessica (Donnie) Toth, Nicole Martin, and Audrey Shumate
along with four great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles Cheeseman, Robert Cheeseman;
aunt, Shirley Estes; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and life-long friend, Linda Jones.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and grandson Shane Martin; best
friend, Vera Johnson; several uncles, aunts, brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, cousins,
nieces, and nephews.
Beverly loved to sew, garden, and read. She made countless clothes, baby clothes, doll
clothes, Halloween costumes, and holiday outfits for her daughters, grandson, and
granddaughters. A favorite memory is of her helping to sew her cousin, Janice’s,
wedding dress. She crocheted and quilted many blankets for her family as well. She
loved to make crafts and decorations for the holidays. Beverly also loved to plant
flowers and help her husband in the vegetable garden. She canned the vegetables they
grew every year. She and John won “Yard of the Year” two years in a row by the
Commercial-News, Danville, Illinois. She was an avid reader and read everything from
the local newspapers, books, magazines, sewing and crochet patterns. She enjoyed
doing the crossword puzzle in the newspaper. But most of all, she loved talking with
family and friends on the phone, sharing news about their lives.
Beverly was employed at Star Fireworks of Danville for 25 years and retired from there
in 1994. After her retirement, she worked for JoAnn’s Fabric and several other small
companies until she accepted employment at Walmart in Danville in the Fabric
Department in 2000. She retired from there in 2014. She never met a stranger and
made many friends over her lifetime.
A graveside service will be held for Beverly at Oakhill Cemetery, 16824 Shangri La Rd,
Oakwood, IL 61858, on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers,
please send donations to the American Lung Association.
